How to prepare for Oxbridge tests and interviews

How to prepare for Oxbridge tests and interviews

October 17, 2017

So you’ve chosen to apply to Oxford or Cambridge, and now you’ve got to do an Oxbridge admissions test or interview. How do you prepare?

For admissions tests

Admissions tests usually take place in November and December, around the same time as interviews. It is important to start preparing early enough so that you are not rushing at the last minute!

Take a look at the website of the test you will be taking, and read through the information provided. This will give you a good feel for what the test will be like and what will be required of you.

Do practice papers. These help you to both revise the information and learn how to answer the questions. Mark the papers yourself and work out what areas you need to revise further.

At Kings Tutors, we offer private tuition for students preparing for Oxbridge assessments, with tutors who are experienced in the area. Whether it is the TSA or the UKCAT, a little preparation with someone who knows how to help could go a long way. Tuition can be provided on a long or short term basis.

For interview

Congratulations for getting to this stage!

The Oxbridge interviews have a reputation for being difficult. The most effective way you can prepare for them is to know your subject, and know yourself. Why are you looking to study this subject at university? What interests you most about your subject? What are you most looking forward to learning at university? Be sure to know the answers to these questions!

Go over everything you have learned at a-level- you don’t need to revise everything in detail, but knowing the key concepts and debates will go a long way. You should also read around your subject so that you can be prepared for the more ‘out-of-the-box’ questions you may be asked.

Read your personal statement over and be prepared to talk more about what you wrote in it. If you mentioned a book you haven’t actually read- read it!

Private tuition is an excellent way to improve your understanding of your subject. At Kings Tutors, our tutors are specialists in their subjects and will be able to point you in the right direction of useful resources. You may also want to consider private tuition if you want to practise through conducting mock interviews. These can help prepare you for the interview environment, and help you learn to answer tricky questions on your feet.

Before the day of the interview, be sure to have worked out your travel plans. Work out which trains you need to get- if you live in London, check the tube line you need is running! Planning the logistics of getting to and from your interview will save you a lot of unnecessary stress and allow you to focus on your preparations.
