English tutors and maths tutors can help children to prepare for these tests

Advice for Parents

There are a variety of benefits to receiving private tutoring. An often understated example of such a benefit is boosted confidence. Tuition in English and maths can be an especially important way of boosting a child’s confidence.

For example, during primary school, the vast majority of assessments and exams which pupils take will relate to English and maths. English tutors and maths tutors can help children to prepare for these tests. This preparation can be very important in children’s boosting confidence. Also, children will continue to have many tests in English and maths until they are at least 16, so tutor aided preparation can be important for confidence in the long term too.

The skills which English tutors and maths tutors teach to children provide a foundation of knowledge which can be built upon with more advanced learning. These skills are also highly transferable: almost every GCSE subject now tests children on their SPAG (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation), many GCSE subjects require essay writing and science subjects require numeracy skills. Therefore, if children receive tutoring in English and Maths their ability and confidence will be improved in their other subjects too.

There are also some special circumstances in which English tutors and maths tutors can help to build confidence. For example, some children may be coming to a British school but may not have grown up in an English speaking country or education system. Online English tutoring can prepare such children for their education in the UK by ensuring that they are confident in their English language skills.

Another example of special circumstances could be for a child who for a range of possible reasons, needs to catch up considerably on work they have missed or being unable to complete. Children’s self-esteem can suffer if they feel that they are not making as much progress as their classmates. However, tuition in particular areas, especially in English and maths (where children progress quickly because a lot of time is devoted to the teaching of these subjects) can help a child to catch up with their peers and can, in turn, restore their confidence.
