Why should we learn French?

The benefits of learning a foreign language are countless, from being able to communicate, and securing better job prospects, to developing better decision making skills and preventing your brain from aging. But why should you learn French specifically?

French is one of the world’s most spoken languages. It might not be the world’s language number one anymore, but it still an important in international politics, as well as business. It is an official language of virtually all European and global organisations such as the UN and its separate branches, the WTO, NATO, the Red Cross or the International Olympic Committee. Three main institutions of the EU are located in French speaking areas: Brussels, Strasbourg, and Luxembourg.

The reasons for French to be the language of diplomacy are not just historical. It is a widely spoken language around the globe – there are more than 220 million French speakers on the five continents. French will open you many doors if you want to work in another European country (France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Monaco), in Canada as well as in most of Africa.

France is not only our close neighbour and our economic and political partner; it is also the world’s fifth biggest economy and third-ranking destination for foreign investment. It is also a permanent member of the UN Security Council and an important motor of the European integration.

French is also the language of culture. Imagine being able to read Sartre, Camus, Foucault or Proust in the original and understand the chansons of Edith Piaf or the popular singers Carla Bruni and Vanessa Paradis!

Learning French gives you a new lens to view the world: being the internet’s third most used language, preceded by English and German but ahead of Spanish, you’ll be able to read Le Monde and L’Obs and watch the worldwide French-language TV5MONDE. Being able to use sources of information in a different language in addition to your preferred English-language media will add a different perspective and thus help you stay better informed.
