Why Learn French?

Why Learn French?

March 10, 2018

The number of students studying foreign languages has fallen in recent years. Yet there are many reasons why it is a good thing to learn a new language. Kings Tutors offers tuition in this language at many different levels. Here’s why we think French is an important language to learn:

  1. Over 220 million people speak French, all over the world. Like English, the French language was spread worldwide as a result of the French Empire, with the result that 77 states are now French-speaking. Knowing this language could therefore be very useful for travel and work, in addition to boosting your CV.

  1. It is the language of the United Nations, the European Union, NATO, the Olympic Committee, and the International Red Cross. If you want to work in any of these global institutions, a knowledge of French is a helpful skill to have.

  1. It is a Romance language, so provides a useful base for learning other Romance languages such as Spanish and Italian. Much of the English language also comes from French.

  1. Although Spanish and Chinese are widely considered to be the most useful languages to know, French still has a place in the business world. This is likely to increase as a result of the development of Francophone Africa, which could be a major investment region in the near future.

Like many languages it continues to pose difficulties for many students. Especially for those who start learning the language in secondary school, the pronunciation of many words can be confusing and unnatural. This is because they frequently make use of rolling r’s and sounds that come from the back of the throat, English doesn’t. A tutor can help students to improve their accent and pronunciation, by giving students the chance to practice one on one in a way that might not be possible at school.

Based in London, Kings Tutors can offer local private French tuition at any level for students living and studying in London. Our tutors have spent a considerable amount of time in France, and love the country and the language. This means that not only can they teach you the skills needed to pass your exams, they can also impart a knowledge and love of the culture.
