Sitting down with your children and helping them with their homework can be difficult, depending on the subject, however with most subjects we can often gage the subject material based on our own education at school. Coding brings an entirely new challenge as it was only introduced into the curriculum in 2013, replacing Information Communication Technology (ICT).  

What is Coding?

The curriculum for this subject involves teaching students the key concepts of computer science, coding, programming creation and understanding digital literacy. In this day and age, the world is relying more and more on computers and digital technology. Figures such as Elon Musk and Steve Jobs being household names due to the technology products they have created. With this in mind, it is important for children to be taught how this subject works so that they understand the world around them. 

Coding is the way that people communicate with a computer and input information or instructions for a computer to perform a specific function. There are various programming languages, such as Python and Java Script, and they each have their own set of rules. 

Why is this subject so important to learn?

Problem solving is a key aspect of coding and computer programming. They require applying numerical logic in order to resolve a problem or create a new programme and this helps children learn valuable skills from a young age. In order to solve many coding problems, children must be able to break the question down into many parts in order to approach the problem correctly. This is a skill that translates across many aspects of life and is one reason why this subject is so important for children to learn. 

With the world becoming more digitalised, more companies require their employees to have at least a basic understanding of this topic and computer literacy. Learning how to code at school provides a solid foundation and employable skills. 

It also encourages children to be creative, as it takes a creative mind to understand the programmes. You need coding in order to create amazing video games online and this is often a big part of the coding syllabus at school, as children will create their own games. Coding gives children the opportunity to use their creativity in a way that is relevant to their own lives and interests!
