It is probably fair to say that simply due to the amount of time spent indoors, 2020 and 2021 have seen us all watching more television and films than usual. To accompany this surge in demand, we are seeing more films and programmes being produced and released than ever before. We have compiled a list of our favourite film adaptations of books to look out for in Spring 2021. We would highly recommend reading the books before watching the film, so why not choose your favourite from the list and get cracking with your reading – you might even finish it before the film is released!
This unassuming film about the discovery of an Anglo-Saxon burial ship in rural Suffolk has shot to recognition and fame worldwide already this year. Starring Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan, this beautiful adaptation of the 2007 novel by John Preston chronicles the remarkable discovery, as well as exploring the deep humanity of those who found it.
Our next entry is a highly anticipated sequel to the hit film Peter Rabbit from 2018, starring James Corden, Rose Byrne and Domhnall Gleeson. Based on the iconic stories by Beatrix Potter, this story sees Peter and the gang return, with an escape from the garden causing mischief and havoc. Whilst not based on one particular story, we would highly recommend diving into the tales of Beatrix Potter with any young child. They are beautifully written and imaginatively crafted stories, and are sure to provide some lockdown entertainment!
Whilst a release date has not yet been announced, we cannot contain our excitement for the latest series of books to receive the Netflix treatment. Redwall is a classic fantasy series by Brian Jacques which chronicles the lives and adventures of a number of anthropomorphised animals. With news that Netflix has obtained rights to the stories, we cannot wait to see them brought to our screens!
This book has become a sensation since its 2008 release, and is perfect for any young-adult fan of sci-fi. The film adaptation will star Spiderman’s Tom Holland and Star Wars’ Daisy Ridley, and is sure to excite any fan of this award-winning novel.
This classic 1965 sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert is a sci-fi lover’s dream: set in the distant future and in worlds unknown, Herbert explores a deep web of fantasy politics, religion, technology, and ecology. There is plenty of time before this film hits the theatres in autumn, so we would encourage everyone to give reading it a go before then!
