And… we are back. We all hoped this would not happen again, but the schools are closed and we are once again having to juggle our own work with entertaining and motivating our children who are receiving wildly different levels of academic support from their schools. We thought we would provide a few tips that have help get us through these tricky times. They may seem simple but if you’re struggling to make everything work, we would encourage you to give them a go!
1) Get some fresh air
This may sound simple bordering on the absurd, but you’d be shocked at how many people struggle to fit in fresh air to their day. Even if this means a five-minute stroll down the street, it may help to clear you head and re-energise you for work and home learning.
2) Keep your work and your relaxation firmly separate
If at all possible, we would encourage you to work and relax in separate spaces – i.e. try not to work in bed or on the sofa, but at a desk with a firm chair and table. This can greatly aid with concentration, and keep you in the zone when learning at home. We fully appreciate that this may not be possible for all, so if you do have to work in the same space in which you relax, try not to have the TV on or Facebook open whilst you study.
3) Structure your days and weeks
Working to a timetable can make an immeasurable difference to productivity when carrying out home learning. If you have allotted times in which you work as well as sacred designated relaxation hours, this can greatly improve both the quantity and quality of work achieved. On the micro level, we would recommend having a rough timetable of work, relaxation, and meals for each day, making sure to give yourself enough downtime to ensure productivity when working. On a larger scale, it is important to have structure in the week, both with days off and weekly patterns. Routine, routine, routine!
4) Healthy eating
We know this is just about the hardest time of our lives to ensure that we’re eating healthily. The fridge is so close and the days so long, and many of us are finding it hard to keep up a healthy diet. If you can try to eat even a piece more of fruit a day or one less takeaway a week, this can have an enormous effect on one’s productivity. Don’t believe us? Give it a go and find out for yourself.
5) Look after your mental health
This is without a doubt the most important point on our list. If you are not in a good headspace, you are not going to be able to excel and achieve the things you should. Which is why we would encourage all readers to reach out to a friend, ask them how
they’re doing, and do our best to stay connected in such an isolating time. If you are feeling down or alone, talk to someone. This is the most crucial step not just in home learning, but in surviving the lockdown altogether.
We hope that this list can provide some help for those struggling with home learning. Please do contact us if you would like any questions answered with regards to different subjects. We would be delighted to help.
