History of Art is the study of objects of art in their historical development and stylistic contexts, i.e. genre, design, format and style. The subject as we know it began in the 19th century, but has precedents that date to the ancient world. Advances in photographic reproduction and printing techniques after World War II lead to increased art reproduction, enabling comparison and helping to advance the discipline.
As a subject, History of Art offers a wide-ranging introduction to western art. You will explore themes such as art’s role in society and patronage – as well as discussing materials, techniques and processes.
History of Art suits students interested in art, history and culture and is a useful complementing subject for students aiming towards a humanities degree.
