Classical Civilisation

The Roman writer, Cicero famously said that: “to know nothing of the past is to remain forever a child”.

The different syllabi hold fast to this view, believing that without knowledge of the past there can be no understanding of the present.  It is important to remember though that studying Classics is not about  just burying yourself in the past; instead it is about discovering a rich and diverse culture, which has shaped the world we live in and continues to have an impact on our lives today.

Classical Civilisation remains an ever-popular subject since the syllabus allows students to study ancient society and literature in translation along with offering modules on archaeology. All of our tutors are able to adapt their teaching styles to ensure that the ancient world will come to life for their tutee.

Pupils are all encouraged to develop the skills of systematic reasoning, critical analysis and independent thought when studying Classical Civilisation. This is why universities and employers continue to value the benefits of a Classical education.
