Fierce competition for schools

Fierce competition for schools

February 10, 2018

At both primary and secondary level, competition to get into the top schools is fierce, especially in London and the South East. In recent years, the number of children sitting entrance exams for independent and grammar schools has increased dramatically, from around 300 to 700 for many senior schools making the competition fierce. Among the hardest private schools to get into are many of the usual suspects- in 2016, only 23% of applicants to Eton received a place. The City of London School had 10 applicants for every place.

Overall, in 2014, 1 in 7 children were unable to attend their first choice school.

For primary school children, the 7, 11 or 13+ may by their first experience of examinations. It is therefore likely that many students could benefit from a little bit of external support to help them achieve the results they need, especially if schools do not offer preparation for the exams. Tutors can help to provide this. Tutoring for entrance exams tends to focus on exam technique, and how to answer the various types of questions that will come up in the exams, as well as the course content. If students have a strong understanding of the kind of questions they are likely to come across, they are more likely to be able to answer them.

At Kings Tutors, our London based tutors have extensive knowledge of the 7, 11 and 13+, as well as specific entrance exams for all of the top independent and selective schools in the country. Our tutors are able to offer in-person tuition to children living or attending school in London throughout term time and the holidays.
