Whether it’s a honing a new skill, reading a new book, learning five words of a new language or simply finding something interesting out about someone you know, discovering new knowledge is rewarding, exciting and useful. We definitely don’t know everything but we like to unearth a few facts and snippets now and then that make us sit up and say ‘I learnt something new today!’.
For example, did you know that hippos make their own sun cream? Their red-coloured sweat actually contains pigment that protects them from sunburn, handy! Or, that hummingbirds beat their wings 60-80 times per second?
The human body is a wealth of crazy facts, for example, there are over 60,000 miles of blood vessels in the human body, enough to stretch around the world twice! Did you know that everyone has a unique tongue print, just like our fingerprints? It’s good to remember how amazing and beautiful the science behind our everyday movements is.
There are also hundreds of bizarre and intriguing events throughout history that never fail to spark an interest. All those times your feet have ached from dancing too much were nothing in comparison to the ‘Dance Fever’ in Strasbourg in 1518. Hundreds of people just started uncontrollably dancing for over a month, literally dancing themselves to death.
Weird and wonderful facts might not dramatically enhance your life skills, job prospects or exam grades, but they’re great for making sure you never forget how fascinating and exciting learning is. A quirky fact might cause you to think about something familiar in a totally new way, a great skill to cultivate. Or maybe hearing something that makes you say ‘Wow!’ is just what’s needed to inspire you to get back to a difficult task. Whatever it is, constantly looking out for new information, facts and ideas will always be rewarding. Plus you’ll always be the star on any quiz or trivia team!
