Find the right work experience. This advice has come from our intern – read on to find out her advice!
Right, where does one begin? If you are one of the lucky ones and know exactly what you want to do, then there is no need to read on. For the majority of people though, it is a minefield when it comes to knowing what to do as a career. Work experience can be a great way of ruling out industries as much as finding the right industry!
Start by looking for a placement in a field or sector you think that you are interested in. Remember that if you are calling the company, be confident, but try to be relaxed. If you are genuinely interested in the field, your enthusiasm should convey your passion for the job. This will make employers more likely to hire you.
On the other hand , if you have no idea what you want to do then this can be slightly trickier. The first thing to do is to look through the subjects you study or subjects you are interested in and see which one is the most fascinating to you. Research which industries each subject leads to so that if you have a passion for a specific subject, you can find the businesses it is linked to – whichever piques your interest.
If you are still stuck on which industry you are interested in, then think about what your interests actually are. Think about what jobs you may find fascinating, but most importantly: think about your strengths. Be very honest about your strengths and what you are good at. Sometimes you may have to persevere at your subject before you develop a true passion for it. It might be worthwhile to try work experience incorporating a subject you have aptitude for.
Now, you have a shortlist of places. Remember to pick the one most suited towards you; if ,for example, there are age restrictions on certain sites, then maybe it isn’t totally appropriate for you. Understand the responsibilities the placement entails- if you feel it is too great, then maybe it isn’t the right job.
