The Rising Star At The Wimbledon Championships 2021

This summer is a summer of sports. After many global sporting events had to be cancelled last year, June brought has already kicked off the sporting season with the Euros 2020 and soon the Olympic and Paralympic games are set to begin in Tokyo. However, since the end of June, all eyes have been drawn to the green courts of Wimbledon where one 18-year-old, from South-East London, has been making her mark on the championships.

Emma Raducanu captured the attention of all at Wimbledon after beating the 2019 French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova on the 1^st of July. Despite only sitting her A-levels recently, Raducanu has displayed her amazing talent in her Wimbledon debut and won the support of the crowds.

This new star was born in Canada and moved to London when she was two. Her father encouraged her to try a multitude of different sports, but Raducanu found a passion for tennis at the age of five and has continued to pursue a tennis career ever since. After completing her maths and economics A-levels, she plans to focus on her professional tennis career and has certainty aced it so far!

While her studies, injuries and the pandemic were a temporary set-back for the teenager, they have not stopped her determination or progress. It was after performing impressively at the Viking Open Nottingham, by reaching the quarterfinals, that she was given a wildcard to Wimbledon. She has certainly made the most of the opportunity by becoming one of the youngest British women ever to reach round three of the championship. This record braking achievement has certainly made Raducanu a rising star in the tennis world.

Raducanu emphasised that setting ‘high standards’ for herself have helped her to get where she is ‘in terms of tennis and also in terms of school results.’ Her school, Newstead Wood School in Orpington, has been showing huge support for her success on social media and described her focused and hardworking attitude at school as ‘exactly the same as she is on the court’. Her achievements so far are incredible and inspiring to show that hard work and dedication can really help you succeed. With a few days left to go for the championship, it will be exciting to see how Raducanu continues and where her career progresses long after this summer!
