Shrove Tuesday, commonly known as Pancake Day, precedes Ash Wednesday, which is normally referred to as the first day of Lent. This wonderful day is celebrated in numerous countries by consuming lots of pancakes.

Shrove Tuesday does not have a set date each year, but instead is a moveable feast that has its date determined by when Easter falls. Shrove Tuesday is a day which sees many people making a point of self-examination, in which they consider what wrongs they need to repent, and what improvements of life they need to ask help for from God.

Being the last day before the remorseful season of lent, related exercises, such as indulging in food that is going to be sacrificed for the upcoming forty days and forty nights, are associated with Shrove Tuesday festivities. The period of Lent witness fasting and religious duties.

The term Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”. This evidently refers to the practice of the last night of eating unhealthy foods before the ritual fasting of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday.
