There is a fiery debate at the moment about the private tuition industry and whether or not it should be encouraged.  Tuition though, of course, should only take place if it is to help the child with their education rather than overloading them. All respectable agencies know this and understand that children should not be given a temporary edge over children who are a similar age. This is because all that will happen is that they will then struggle later on in their school career.

Responsible tutoring instead means tutoring in a way that doesn’t create dependence on the tutor; hinder a child’s ability to learn independently; doesn’t over-tutor or take up all a child’s free time. Tuition, consequently, boosts confidence, motivates the pupils and can indeed enrich pupils’ education. It should build upon what the child is being taught at school. Also a tutor is different to a teacher in the way that tutors are there to inspire their tutee and go at their own pace. The rapport developed between a tutor and tutee is often something that cannot be created in a large classroom full of children.

In addition to this, tutoring agencies tend to encourage three-way communication with the tutor, tutee, parent/school. This is so that anything learnt out of school compliments what is happening at school; it is important that everyone is working towards the same goals.
