The Roman writer, Cicero famously said that: "to know nothing of the past is to remain forever a child".
The different syllabi hold fast to this view, believing that without knowledge of the past there can be no understanding of the present. It is important to remember though that studying Classics is not about just burying yourself in the past; instead it is about discovering a rich and diverse culture, which has shaped the world we live in and continues to have an impact on our lives today. Classical Civilisation remains an ever-popular subject since the syllabus allows students to study ancient society and literature in translation along with offering modules on archaeology. All of our tutors are able to adapt their teaching styles to ensure that the ancient world will come to life for their tutee. Pupils are all encouraged to develop the skills of systematic reasoning, critical analysis and independent thought when studying Classical Civilisation. It is important to remember though that studying Classics is not about just burying yourself in the past; instead it is about discovering a rich and diverse culture, which has shaped the world we live in and continues to have an impact on our lives today. This can be done through studying the language and literature to art archaeology and reception studies. Kings Tutors can offer tutors for all areas of Classics. Classics can be broken down into Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation. Latin tends to be studied in three components: language, literature and cultural context. Emphasis is placed on the links between Latin and English, and other modern languages, so that pupils’ language skills are improved across the curriculum. All tips learnt in Latin can be transferred to other subjects so, therefore, making it a very useful subject to study. It is very methodical so problem solving is key. Similar skills are needed when learning Greek along with the additional challenge of learning a new alphabet. Our tutors are all able to help pupils learn how to effectively decode the ’secrets’ of this language and allow this to become second nature to them.
